Nepal and China border hit by deadly Himalayan floods and landslides
Devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by a glacial collapse have struck the Himalayan border regions between Nepal and China, resulting in a massive humanitarian crisis.
In Nepal, the death toll has risen to at least 626, with over 2,400 people reported missing. Rescue operations are being hampered by rugged terrain, destroyed infrastructure, and the formation of new barrier lakes that threaten further flooding. Significant damage has been reported to bridges, roads, and hydroelectric plants, including a situation where over 100 people are believed to be trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli-3A plant.
In China's Tibet region, at least 554 people remain missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims traveling toward Mount Kailash. The disaster has affected approximately 93,000 people, according to the Red Cross.
International organizations have issued urgent appeals. UNICEF has stated that at least 17,000 children in the affected areas of Nepal require immediate humanitarian aid following the destruction of numerous schools. India is actively coordinating rescue efforts for its citizens, having already rescued 84 nationals while working to locate 290 others.
