Rasuwa district flash floods cause widespread destruction in Nepal and Tibet FAST-MOVING
A massive flash flood triggered by an avalanche or potential glacial lake outburst in Tibet has caused widespread devastation in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and parts of China’s Tibet region. The surge in the Bhote Koshi River has swept away entire villages, roads, and bridges, particularly impacting the Syaprubesi and Timure areas.
Preliminary reports indicate at least eight deaths in Nepal, though casualties may rise. The Nepal Tourism Board reports that 384 tourists are missing, including 291 foreign nationals, with at least 105 being Indian citizens. In Tibet, a mudslide at the Gyirong border crossing has also caused significant casualties and disrupted communications, power, and transport links. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all available resources to be mobilized for rescue efforts.
The flood has severely impacted infrastructure, damaging at least 13 hydropower projects with a total capacity of approximately 748 megawatts. Rescue operations are underway, involving the Nepal Army, police, and emergency teams, though high water levels have temporarily prevented helicopters from landing in the hardest-hit areas. Authorities have issued high-alert notices for residents along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers.
