Late July 2026 Nepal monsoon floods, landslides & road bans

Entities: Nepal · Nepal Police · Mechi Highway · Pasang Lhyamu Highway · Araniko Highway

Overview

The monsoon that entered Nepal on 19 June has persisted into late July, keeping heavy rain, floods and landslides widespread. By mid‑July 73 disaster incidents had been recorded and authorities imposed night‑time bans on the BP and Kanti highways, with additional hour‑specific restrictions on vulnerable stretches.

Damage continued to spread. The Mechi Highway was completely blocked at Rajduwali, landslides closed sections of the Araniko Highway at Jiro Kilo and Kodari, and river‑erosion damaged the Lamosangu and Ramechhap roads. The Department of Roads opened an alternative passage through the Khimti Rural Electric Cooperative premises and began surveying a parallel alignment along the Trishuli River to bypass the landslide‑prone Narayanghat‑Muglin segment. A Rs 220 million stabilization project is under way at the Tuin Khola area.

A forecast issued on 26 July warned of intensified rainfall over Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces, raising the risk of flash floods, debris flows and further road or air‑transport disruptions. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reiterated the same warning later that day, urging the public to stay alert and follow weather advisories.

On 31 July the Nepal Police confirmed that heavy monsoon rains had triggered landslides and flooding that blocked or partially obstructed a growing list of major routes: the Araniko Highway at Jirokilo and Kodari, the Mechi Highway in Ilam Municipality‑9, the Lamosanghu‑Ramechhap road, the Pasang Lhhyamu Highway in Rasuwa, the Kanti Highway in Lalitpur, the Bhimphedi‑Kulekhani‑Kathmandu road, the Jajarkot‑Dolpa road and the Beni‑Jomsom road. Night‑time travel remained restricted on the affected sections, leaving many districts without reliable road access.

Officials continue to urge vigilance as rescue and relief operations proceed across the affected districts.
