BIE warns Serbia of consequences if Expo 2027 is canceled

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has warned that Serbia would face significant financial and legal consequences if a future government were to cancel the Expo 2027 exhibition in Belgrade.

According to the BIE, Expo 2027 represents an international obligation undertaken by Serbia as the host nation. The organization noted that projects of this scale are designed as long-term national endeavors intended to transcend individual electoral cycles. The BIE stated that its mission specifically sought and received confirmation of support from across the Serbian political spectrum prior to granting the recognition.

Should the event be canceled, the host would be required to reimburse participating countries for justified costs incurred due to their involvement. Additionally, the organizer would be liable for costs owed to the BIE and must fulfill various contractual and legal obligations under Serbian law.
