Biedronka and Lidl pilot automated parking systems in Poland

Retail chains Biedronka and Lidl are piloting automated parking systems using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology at various locations in Poland. The system uses cameras to record vehicle entry and exit times, eliminating the need for customers to collect paper tickets or manually enter registration numbers into machines or apps.

Lidl is currently testing the technology in approximately 10 locations, including Lębork, Kórnik, Poznań, Rotmanka, and Wrocław. The goal is to ensure parking remains free for customers during their shopping trips—typically for up to 90 minutes—while preventing non-customers from occupying spaces.

Biedronka has implemented ANPR testing at over 10 sites, including Wrocław, though the retailer already manages various forms of parking control across more than 300 locations. Both companies have reported satisfactory pilot results, noting improved space availability for customers, though they have not disclosed specific data regarding fines, complaints, or the exact impact on parking turnover.
