Big Fiber secures $250 M to expand dark‑fiber network for AI data centers

Big Fiber has raised $250 million in financing from Stonepeak and Canada’s Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) to expand its privately owned dark‑fiber infrastructure. The capital will fund new metro and long‑haul routes in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hillsboro, Oregon and Atlanta, Georgia, boosting capacity to roughly 850 route miles and over 3 million fiber miles.

Company officials say the funding responds to surging AI‑driven workloads that require ultra‑low latency and high‑bandwidth links. Chief Commercial Officer Patton Lochridge noted customers are seeking “extreme route diversity” with tri‑/quad‑versity networks, while CEO Bruce Garrison called the financing a “pivotal moment” to meet the “insatiable demand for both data and compute capacity” across AI ecosystems. The expansion supports hyperscalers and large data‑center operators building regional AI campuses that rely on dense metro connectivity beyond traditional telecom networks.

Industry analysts have highlighted that AI traffic can generate hundreds of times more inter‑connect bandwidth than traditional data‑center flows, pushing operators to prioritize high‑strand‑count, low‑loss fiber corridors. Big Fiber’s buildout is positioned to address this shift by delivering purpose‑built dark‑fiber routes that can support the latency‑sensitive communication between GPUs in distributed AI clusters.
