Bihar authorities monitor river levels following devastating Nepal floods
Authorities in Bihar, India, are on high alert following devastating flash floods in neighboring Nepal. The floods, triggered by a massive surge in the Bhote Koshi River and an ice-rock landslide near the China border, have caused significant loss of life, including at least 547 deaths in Nepal, and extensive damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities.
In Bihar, several major rivers including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, and Ghaghra have been reported flowing above danger levels in various locations. While the Valmikinagar Barrage saw water levels reach 1,02,100 cusecs on Friday, the Gandak Barrage in West Champaran remained within a normal range of 97,500 cusecs as of Saturday morning.
Bihar Minister Nand Kishor Ram has visited the barrage and instructed officials to remain fully alert, stating that the state government is prepared for any emergency. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local water resources departments are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil on river embankments. Additionally, diplomatic channels are working to locate Indian nationals who may be missing due to the disaster in Nepal.
