Bihar on high alert as Nepal flash floods trigger rising river levels
Devastating flash floods in Nepal, triggered by an ice-rock landslide near the Tibet-Nepal border, have resulted in at least 547 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities. The disaster has placed neighboring Indian states on high alert, particularly Bihar, due to rising water levels in interconnected river systems.
In Bihar, several major rivers including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, and Ghaghra are flowing above danger levels in multiple locations. To manage the surge, authorities have opened all 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage in Valmiki Nagar and 17 gates of the Kosi Barrage at Veerpur. The Valmikinagar Barrage water level reached 1,02,100 cusecs on Friday, though the Gandak Barrage in West Champaran was reported at 97,500 cusecs on Saturday morning.
Bihar Minister Nand Kishor Ram has inspected the sites and instructed officials to maintain 24-hour vigilance over embankments. The Water Resources Department is monitoring river discharges every thirty minutes to manage the potential impact of the Bhote Koshi River's surge on downstream areas.
