Bihar flood alert following Nepal disaster
Overview
Following devastating flash floods in Nepal, which were triggered by a surge in the Bhote Koshi River and a landslide near the China border, authorities in Bihar, India, have been placed on high alert. The disaster in Nepal has resulted in at least 547 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure.
In Bihar, several major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, and Ghaghra, have been reported flowing above danger levels. While the Valmikinagar Barrage recorded water levels of 1,02,100 cusecs, the Gandak Barrage in West Champaran remained within a normal range.
In response, the Bihar administration has mobilized the SDRF, NDRF, and helicopter resources, particularly in border districts such as East Champaran, West Champaran, Saran, Hajipur, and Muzaffarpur. Officials are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil on river embankments, and diplomatic channels are active in an effort to locate Indian nationals reported missing in Nepal.
