Nepal and Bihar flood crisis continues with new disasters
Overview
The humanitarian crisis in Nepal and Bihar has continued to evolve following the catastrophic glacial collapse on August 26, which caused over 1,100 deaths and significant infrastructure damage.
In Nepal’s Gorkha district, a new flash flood occurred when a landslide in the Chumnubri rural municipality temporarily blocked the Budhi Gandaki River. When the resulting dam of rocks and sediment gave way, a surge of water, mud, and debris flowed downstream. The Nepal Army has deployed helicopters and ground teams to rescue isolated residents, assisting at least 49 people, while five individuals remain missing. Hydrologist Binod Parajuli noted that current records do not attribute this specific event to precipitation.
In Bihar, India, the aftermath of the Gandak River flooding has led to disciplinary actions within the Bihar Water Resources Department. Seven engineers, including executive engineers Santosh Kumar Prabhakar and Mohammad Sajid Iqbal, have been suspended, and Chief Engineer Kumar Manoj Gupta is facing departmental proceedings. Investigations into the embankment breaches revealed that officials “failed to act promptly during emergencies,” lacked sufficient materials, and demonstrated poor coordination with local residents.
While river levels are receding—with the water level at Rewa Ghat dropping 177 cm from its peak—authorities continue to monitor sites like Lalganj, Vaishali, where water remains above danger marks. Emergency materials have been stockpiled at breach sites to secure damaged embankments.
