Bihar and Nepal face severe flooding as Ganga breaks records

Severe flooding is impacting large populations in Bihar, India, and Nepal. In Bihar, the Ganga river has surpassed previous record levels at Sultanganj, with water levels in Bhagalpur also rising significantly above danger marks. Officials report that over 34 lakh people across 13 districts have been affected, with many villages and roads submerged or cut off. The state has deployed NDRF and SDRF teams to evacuate approximately 20,000 residents, and over 1,400 boats are being used for rescue operations. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has inspected relief camps and community kitchens, while opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav has called for the floods to be declared a national disaster, requesting Rs 5,000 crore in central assistance.

In Nepal, devastating flash floods triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Tibet border have caused a massive humanitarian crisis. The death toll has climbed to 1,365, with thousands of people still reported missing. The Bhotekoshi River swept away homes, infrastructure, and hydropower projects, causing widespread destruction across northern and central regions of the country.
