Overview

Heavy monsoon rains and glacial-related landslides in Nepal have intensified flooding across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. In Gonda, the Ghaghara River is swelling, threatening over 15 villages in the Colonelganj and Tarabganj areas, with an estimated 30,000 people at risk if levels continue to rise. In Mau, the Saryu River rose 40 centimeters in 24 hours, reaching 70.00 meters—10 centimeters above its danger mark.

The crisis has been further compounded by flash floods in Nepal, where surges in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers have impacted the Gandak River system. To manage rising waters, authorities opened all 36 gates at the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage, with discharge levels reaching 1.50 lakh cusecs and projected to peak at 2 lakh cusecs. While officials note these levels are lower than historical peaks, a potential 3-meter flood wave remains a concern for downstream regions.

In Bihar, nine districts—including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, Saran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, and Vaishali—are on high alert. In Uttar Pradesh, monitoring has been ordered for the Gandak and Narayani rivers in Maharajganj and Kushinagar. Central leadership is coordinating with state Chief Ministers, and NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed to sensitive low-lying areas.
