River flooding in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar

Overview

The humanitarian crisis following a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse and ice-rock landslide in Nepal has intensified. While earlier reports estimated deaths approaching 475, local authorities in Nepal have since reported a death toll of 258, with 910 people still missing. In India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that 288 Indian citizens remain untraceable, including workers from the Trishuli-1 power project and participants in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

In Bihar, the flooding situation has escalated significantly. The Ganga River has breached its historic flood level at Gandhi Ghat in Patna, reaching 50.53 metres and surpassing the previous record of 50.52 metres set in 2016. Multiple major rivers, including the Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati, and Ghaghara, are flowing above danger marks. The impact has expanded, with estimates suggesting between 16.85 lakh and 19.57 lakh people across 11 to 18 districts are now affected. The disaster has impacted hundreds of gram panchayats and dozens of blocks.

In Chhapra, the breaching of two dams has submerged numerous villages, while residential areas in Begusarai have seen significant inundation. Flooding has also disrupted transportation, covering two major highways and forcing the suspension of cruise and boat operations on the Ganges.

To assist with rescue, authorities have deployed 27 SDRF and up to 9 NDRF teams alongside over 1,100 boats. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has conducted aerial surveys and directed officials to ensure 24-hour community kitchens, deploy mobile medical teams, and maintain constant surveillance of embankments.
