Bihar floods affect over 4.6 million people across 15 districts
Severe flooding in Bihar, triggered by heavy rainfall in the state and Nepal's catchment areas, has affected over 4.6 million people across 15 districts. Major rivers, including the Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, and Punpun, are flowing above danger levels at various locations.
In Bhagalpur, the Ganga river at Sultanganj reached levels surpassing its previous record set in August 2021. The Kosi river is also nearing its high flood level in the Kursela block, causing villages to be cut off and destroying crops such as maize and jute.
The human impact has been significant, including a tragedy in Bhagalpur where five people drowned while attempting to rescue a family member from deep floodwater.
To assist those affected, the Disaster Management Department is operating 1,194 community kitchens and 15 relief camps, which provide food, medical care, and accommodation for over 11,000 people. Authorities are also using boats and tractors to facilitate evacuations in submerged areas.
