Bihar floods impact millions as Ganga River breaks 2016 record in Patna
Severe flooding in Bihar has reached critical levels as the Ganga River surpassed its highest recorded flood level at Gandhi Ghat in Patna, exceeding the 2016 record. The rising water levels have impacted approximately 16.85 to 19.57 lakh people across 11 to 18 districts, affecting hundreds of gram panchayats and dozens of blocks.
Multiple major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, and Ghaghara, are flowing above danger marks. In Chhapra, the breaching of two dams has submerged several villages, while in Begusarai, residential areas have seen significant inundation. The flooding has also disrupted transportation, with water covering two major highways and forcing the suspension of cruise and boat operations on the Ganges.
In response, the Bihar government has intensified relief and rescue operations. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has conducted aerial surveys and directed officials to ensure 24-hour community kitchens, deploy mobile medical teams, and maintain constant surveillance of embankments. Relief efforts include the deployment of 27 SDRF and 7 to 9 NDRF teams, the operation of over 1,100 boats for evacuation, and the distribution of food packets and polythene sheets to affected families.
