Legislative Council elections underway in four Indian states

Polling is currently taking place for 28 biennial Legislative Council seats across the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The elections, which involve voters from both graduate and teacher constituencies, began at 8:00 AM on Friday and are scheduled to conclude at 4:00 PM.

In Uttar Pradesh, 11 seats are up for election, including five graduate and six teacher constituencies. In Bihar, eight seats are being contested, with four graduate and four teacher constituencies. Karnataka is holding elections for four seats, while Maharashtra is conducting polls for five seats.

Political competition is high, with major parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress, and Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) fielding candidates. In Bihar, the Jan Suraaj Party is contesting all eight seats. The election process is being conducted via ballot papers rather than electronic voting machines. Results for these elections are scheduled to be announced on October 27.
