Legislative Council elections held in four Indian states
Overview
Voting has concluded for 28 biennial Legislative Council seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The elections, which utilized ballot papers for graduate and teacher constituencies, were scheduled for results on October 27.
In Uttar Pradesh, where 11 seats were contested, the process was marked by political tension. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Election Commission and alleged that voters were being obstructed. Additionally, reports emerged of a physical altercation between Samajwadi Party and BJP workers in Muzaffarnagar, an incident that was reportedly de-escalated by police near a state minister.
In Bihar, the eight contested seats featured a triangular contest for the first time. Turnout data indicated significant participation in teacher constituencies, though turnout for graduate constituencies was lower. Maharashtra and Karnataka completed their respective polls for five and four seats.
