Bihar rivers face rising water levels and flood threats
Major rivers in Bihar, including the Ganges, Kosi, Gandak, and Son, are experiencing rising water levels, prompting heightened alerts from district administrations and water resource departments.
In Begusarai, while the Ganges has recently seen a slight decrease in water levels at Hathidah, it remains approximately 47 centimeters above the danger mark. However, rising levels in Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Buxar suggest that water levels in Begusarai may rise again within two days, threatening several blocks including Bachhwara, Teghra, and Barauni. Thousands of acres of Kharif crops have already been affected by flooding in these areas.
Across the state, significant discharge rates have been recorded at various barrages. The Kosi River's downstream flow at Virpur Barrage reached 192,735 cusecs, while the Gandak River at Valmikinagar Barrage recorded 150,200 cusecs. The Son River's flow at Indrapuri Barrage reached 425,854 cusecs. In Patna, the Ganges at Gandhi Ghat is 80 centimeters above the danger mark.
Authorities are responding to riverbank erosion in Bhagalpur and have ordered the deployment of boats, rowers, and divers in sensitive areas. In Buxar, officials are inspecting vulnerable zones to prepare for potential flooding as water levels continue to fluctuate.
