Bihar STF officer Akshay arrested in Bharat Tiwari encounter case

On July 31, police in Ara district, Bihar, arrested Special Task Force (STF) personnel Akshay Kumar for his alleged role in the police encounter that killed 28‑year‑old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari on 17 June 2026 in Bilauti village, Bhojpur district. The operation was carried out jointly by Ara police and the STF, and followed a series of demands from Tiwari’s mother, Asha Devi, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike seeking the arrest of several police officials. The family maintains that Tiwari had surrendered after discarding his weapon, yet the police maintain he fired multiple rounds, prompting retaliatory fire. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary met the family, promised justice, and several officials named by the family—including Jagdishpur DSP Rajesh Sharma, Shahpur SHO Rajesh Kumar Mallkar and SI Ankit Aryan—have been transferred or removed. Legal proceedings are continuing and a judicial inquiry is underway. Separate from the arrest, the family also lodged an FIR alleging social‑media threats against its members.
