Hunedoara County faces over 60 hectares of vegetation fires
In mid‑August 2026 a series of vegetation fires swept several Romanian counties. In Hunedoara County more than 60 ha of dry vegetation burned, with the largest blaze covering about 50 ha between Băiești, Sălașu de Sus and Râu Alb. Firefighters from Petroșani, Baru and Hunedoara worked for eight hours to protect homes, a restaurant, a farm and agricultural crops. Smaller fires also hit Mihăiești (over 8 ha), Ciopeia (two dead animals) and Peștișu Mic.
Other counties reported similar incidents: Satu Mare recorded over 6 ha burned across multiple localities; Mehedinţi saw more than 100 ha destroyed; Bihor’s Tărcăiţa forest lost 21 ha; Neamț’s Ghigoiești farm fire damaged four outbuildings and part of a roof; and Arad experienced three near‑simultaneous fires, including a house blaze in Ilteu. Hundreds of firefighters and volunteer rescue teams were mobilised, often for 7‑9 hours, to contain the flames and prevent spread to forests and settlements.
The fires occurred amid a heat wave and a national campaign (15 July‑15 October) warning against the burning of dry vegetation, litter, or discarded cigarettes. Authorities repeatedly urged the public to avoid open flames, report fires to 112 and follow safety guidelines.
