Romanian wildfire surge and prevention efforts July 2026

Entities: Inspectoratul pentru Situații de Urgență Argeș · Romanian firefighters · Moldovan Fire Service · ISU Alba · Botoșani County

Overview

In early July 2026 a series of accidental fires swept several Romanian counties. ISU Oltenia extinguished three crop fires in Dolj County (≈35 ha) on 8‑9 July, while a gas‑cylinder explosion in Boureni injured one person. A tanker fire on the Zalău ring road (10 July) and a farm blaze in Carasa, Botoșani (12 July) caused property loss and animal deaths. Later that day vegetation fires burned small areas in Vaslui County and threatened homes in Largu.

On 13 July the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), together with Phoenix Media, launched a nationwide information campaign (15 July‑15 October) urging citizens not to burn dry vegetation and outlining penalties for violations.

The fire‑season continued into late July. On 24‑27 July the Inspectorate recorded 177 emergency incidents in Argeș County, where crews fought eight vegetation and waste fires in towns such as Pitești, Mioveni, Mălureni, Bârla, Ungheni, Aninoasa, Leordeni and Bradu. A blaze in Leordeni consumed about 5,000 m² of wheat stubble and threatened residential buildings and fields. Authorities reiterated penalties of 7,500‑15,000 lei for individuals and 50,000‑100,000 lei for legal entities for illegal burning.

On 28 July firefighters battled multiple vegetation fires in Botoșani County—Costești (≈200 m²), Agafton (≈2 ha, three houses saved) and the extensive Trușești blaze (≈20 ha)—as well as a 6,000 m² fire near a residence in Odverem, Alba County. Military and volunteer units attributed the outbreaks to illegal open‑flame burning, reinforcing earlier campaign warnings that wind‑driven fires can quickly spread to homes, farms and forests.
