PTI launches Islamabad march after government talks fail

Negotiations between the Pakistani federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposition have ended in a deadlock, prompting the launch of a mass protest march toward Islamabad. The PTI-led demonstration, which began in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aims to pressure the government for the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and to secure his access to legal counsel and medical treatment.

Key points of contention include the PTI's demand for immediate access to Khan for political consultation and the federal government's insistence on cooperation from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government regarding counter-terrorism operations. While the government has offered to restore meetings between Khan and his family or lawyers, it has refused to include specific medical assessment terms in a formal agreement.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has led the march from Lakki Marwat, stating the movement is essential for the party's leadership. Meanwhile, federal authorities have prepared for the arrival of protesters by using shipping containers to block access routes to the capital. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and adviser Rana Sanaullah have warned that the march will not be permitted to enter Islamabad and that any attempts to cause disorder will be met with legal force.
