Bilbao rally on May 30 supports Cuban energy relief campaign

On Saturday, May 30, a solidarity concentration and cultural event titled “Kuba: Genozidioa Gelditu” (Cuba: stop the genocide) took place in front of Bilbao’s city hall. The gathering marked the closing of the "Argia eta indarra Kubarentzat – ¡Contra el bloqueo, energía para Cuba!" campaign, which has raised funds to install solar‑power systems in Cuban health centres.

Artists from the Basque cultural scene, including Virginia Imaz, Oihulari Klown and troubadour Xabier San Sebastián, participated, and Aleida Guevara, a Cuban paediatric doctor and daughter of Che Guevara, sent a video message thanking the Basque people for their support of the Havana paediatric hospital. Organisers presented the campaign’s financial results, which exceeded expectations, and promoted the international online petition “Firmo por Cuba”.

The rally denounced the severe economic pressure on Cuba, citing US sanctions that have left the island with only a third of its medicines, long surgical waitlists, frequent power and water outages, and rising poverty and emigration. The event was coordinated by Euskal Herria‑Kuba Ekimena, the Hegoak platform and the association Euskadi‑Cuba.
