Cuban solidarity protests and diplomatic tensions worldwide

Entities: Cuba · United States · Abelardo De la Espriella Otero · Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla · Panamanian solidarity group

Overview

The solidarity movement that began with a rally in Bilbao in late May 2024 has grown into a trans‑Atlantic campaign denouncing the U.S. embargo on Cuba. A televised “Cadenazo por Cuba” broadcast in June spurred coordinated actions in Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil and other European cities, while Brazil marked the centenary of Fidel Castro with light shows and a Brasília caravan. Early July saw protests in Avilés, Buenos Aires and Mexico City involving political parties, labour unions, cultural groups and religious organisations. From 3 to 5 July, Gijón hosted the XVIII Encuentro Estatal de Solidaridad con Cuba, gathering over 200 participants from 45 organisations; the event commemorated the 32nd anniversary of the sister‑city pact with Havana and featured Cuban officials condemning the blockade as a “war strategy.” On 17 July, a rally in Lanús screened the documentary *Unblock Cuba* and launched a fundraising drive for solar‑energy equipment. On 26 July 2024, anniversary rallies were held in Rio de Janeiro’s National Library, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and at the Gabriel García Márquez Cultural Centre in Colombia. In Cuba, the Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos convened an international meeting in Pinar del Río, where President Miguel Díaz‑Canel warned that sanctions increase the risk of aggression. On 27 July 2026, demonstrations took place in more than 30 cities worldwide on National Rebellion Day. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla called the U.S. embargo “genocidal” and urged its immediate end. Colombian president‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella Otero announced the closure of Colombia’s embassy in Havana and a severing of diplomatic ties; the Cuban foreign ministry dismissed the move as driven by U.S. anti‑Cuban policy.
