Bildu challenges PNV dominance in Basque election

The recent Basque autonomous election confirmed the long‑standing dominance of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which retained a governing majority by securing 27 seats in the Jeltzale (regional) parliament and relying on the support of the socialist PSE‑EE, which holds 12 seats. While the PNV remains the leading party, its vote share showed a modest decline compared to previous decades.

Bildu entered the election with a comparable number of seats but secured significantly fewer votes, yet its presence signals a growing challenge to the PNV’s hegemony, especially in Guipúzcoa and Álava. The election outcome reflects demographic stagnation, rising immigration, and a shifting political landscape that could affect the PNV’s future hold on power.
