Băile Herculane railway station to undergo major restoration

CFR Infrastructură has released the first renderings for the restoration of the Băile Herculane railway station, a significant historical monument in Romania. The project aims to restore the historic ensemble while adapting it to modern standards of comfort, safety, and accessibility, all while preserving the architectural elements that define its identity.

Constructed between 1878 and 1886 based on plans by Austrian engineer Auguste de Serres Wieczffinski, the station was inspired by a pavilion at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The Baroque-style building features a dome supported by two columns, decorated with Roman mythology-inspired paintings and polychrome tiles.

The station holds deep historical significance, having served as a hunting lodge for Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria before becoming a railway station. Notable historical figures who have passed through the station include Emperor Franz Joseph, Empress Sissi, King Carol I of Romania, and Alexander I of Serbia. The restoration work will include consolidating the buildings, repairing the dome, restoring facades, wooden joinery, stone decorations, and polychrome mosaic floors.
