Bille Kingdom resident dies following gas explosion in Rivers State

Joy Amos, a 28-year-old resident of Bille Kingdom in Rivers State, Nigeria, has died following a gas-related explosion. The incident occurred on September 3, 2026, when an explosion in her room shattered windows and caused severe burns. After receiving initial care in Bille, she was evacuated to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, where she passed away on September 22.

Amnesty International reported that the explosion was likely linked to continuous methane gas leaks in the area. Investigations indicated that the room where the incident occurred had exhibited gas-bubbling sounds and odors prior to the explosion. Such emissions have been documented across the Bille community, including in homes, schools, and public spaces, and are suspected to be connected to decommissioned oil and gas wells.

In response to her death, the organization Social Action has called for an immediate, independent autopsy and a full investigation into the circumstances of the explosion and her subsequent medical treatment. While the Rivers State Government had previously intervened to cover her medical costs, advocacy groups highlight the death as a demonstration of the ongoing dangers posed by oil and gas pollution in the Niger Delta region.
