Gas explosion and pollution in Bille Kingdom
Overview
On September 3, 2026, a gas explosion occurred in a residential room in Bille Kingdom, located in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The incident caused severe burn injuries to a resident and shattered windows.
Following the explosion, the civil society organization Spaces for Change (S4C) called for an independent technical investigation and an Environmental and Legacy Liability Assessment (ELLA). S4C noted that the community had previously reported gas odors, gas bubbling through waterways, and seepage in residential areas, posing risks to public health and local livelihoods.
On September 22, 2026, the victim, 28-year-old Joy Amos, died at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt after being evacuated from Bille. Amnesty International suggested the explosion was likely linked to continuous methane gas leaks, possibly connected to decommissioned oil and gas wells. In light of the fatality, the organization Social Action has demanded an immediate, independent autopsy and a full investigation into the explosion and the medical treatment provided.
