Billie Eilish transforms for film debut in “The Bell Jar”

Billie Eilish, the 24‑year‑old Grammy‑winning singer, is making her feature‑film debut as Esther Greenwood in Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar. The production is being shot in Toronto and nearby Oshawa, Canada, with filming that began in late June and is slated to wrap by 25 August. Eilish’s look for the 1950s‑set story features shoulder‑length brown hair, a fitted red knit top, a waist‑nipped skirt, pearl earrings and bold red lipstick, a dramatic departure from her signature oversized streetwear.

The film also stars Carey Mulligan as Esther’s mother and includes Connor Storrie in the cast. Focus Features will distribute the movie in the United States, while Plan B, StudioCanal and Joy Coalition are among the producers. Images from the set have drawn widespread attention, with fans noting that Eilish is “almost unrecognizable.” The adaptation is expected to be released internationally in 2027.
