Billy Joel provides health update following brain surgery
Singer-songwriter Billy Joel has provided a health update to fans, stating that he is “doing okay” following brain surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). During a live call-in special on his SiriusXM channel, the 77-year-old musician addressed concerns regarding his diagnosis, noting that the condition “sounds a lot worse than it actually is.”
Joel revealed that he underwent a procedure to implant a shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from his brain. He reported that the surgery has led to improvements in his memory, balance, and overall functioning. However, he noted that he still experiences some issues with balance and hearing, which he attributed to a combination of the condition and his age.
Following his diagnosis in 2025, Joel had to cancel several concerts to focus on recovery and physical therapy. Medical professionals advised him to limit the physical strain and loud environments associated with performing to avoid symptoms similar to a concussion. While he has made brief appearances, he has not yet returned to a full touring schedule.
