Billy Joel unable to drive or perform due to brain disorder

Singer Billy Joel has revealed that he is currently unable to drive or perform live due to his ongoing struggle with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain condition involving an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 77-year-old musician explained that his neurologist has advised against performing, noting that the sensory intensity of a concert—including loud volume, bright lighting, and physical stress—can feel like sustaining a concussion given his condition.

Joel, who underwent brain surgery to implant a shunt to manage the disorder, stated that he must undergo further neurological evaluations to determine if a return to the stage is possible. He noted that while the condition affects his balance, memory, vision, and hearing, he feels “OK” and considers it “not that serious.”

As a result of his health challenges and the impact on his balance, Joel is also auctioning off more than 70 motorcycles from his personal collection. The auction, held in association with Gooding & Company and Christie’s, is scheduled for November at the Javits Center in New York City. Joel mentioned that he decided to sell the collection because he can no longer ride as frequently as he once did.
