Billy Joel undergoes brain surgery to treat hydrocephalus
Singer Billy Joel has revealed that he underwent brain surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition involving the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The 77-year-old musician shared the update via his SiriusXM channel, noting that the procedure involved the implantation of a shunt to drain excess fluid.
Joel reported significant improvements in his memory, balance, and overall ability to function following the surgery. He described experiencing a sensation of being on a boat due to poor equilibrium before the intervention. He also noted that doctors warned him that performing loud rock music could have been causing effects similar to repeated concussions, potentially damaging his brain nerves and leading to the loss of brain cells.
After being diagnosed in 2025, Joel had canceled scheduled concerts to focus on his health and began undergoing physiotherapy. He reassured his fans that he is doing well and is not going anywhere, stating, “I’m okay. I want people to know: don’t worry about me. I’m still here.”
