BioCirc launches world's largest biogas carbon capture plant

BioCirc has launched the world’s largest carbon capture installation at a biogas plant in Vesthimmerland, located in northern Jutland, Denmark. The facility utilizes Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology to combine biomethane production with the capture and permanent storage of biogenic CO2.

The plant is expected to capture 32,500 tonnes of CO2 annually. The captured greenhouse gas will be liquefied and transported to the Greensand Future underground storage site, operated by INEOS, in the Danish sector of the North Sea for permanent sequestration.

This project is the first of five planned installations by BioCirc. Once all facilities are operational, the company aims to scale up the capture and storage of CO2 from biogas significantly. The initiative is supported by the Danish Energy Agency through the NECCS fund. The project's economic model relies on the sale of carbon credits generated from negative emissions, targeting hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as shipping and heavy road transport.
