Northern European carbon capture and storage developments

Overview

Large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects have recently been launched in Northern Europe, targeting industrial and biogenic emissions.

In the Netherlands, Yara International inaugurated Europe’s largest industrial CCS facility at its Sluiskil ammonia and fertilizer plant. The project creates a cross-border value chain where up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 are captured annually and shipped to Norway’s Northern Lights terminal for subsea storage. The initiative aims to store approximately 12 million tonnes of CO2 over 15 years.

In Denmark, BioCirc launched the world’s largest carbon capture installation at a biogas plant in Vesthimmerland. Utilizing Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology, the facility is expected to capture 32,500 tonnes of CO2 annually for sequestration at the Greensand Future site in the North Sea. This project marks the first of five planned installations intended to generate carbon credits for hard-to-decarbonize sectors.
