Biodiesel markets face price shifts and regulatory changes

The biofuels sector is experiencing significant shifts driven by price volatility and regulatory changes. In Rotterdam, biodiesel prices recently hit a historic low of $985 per ton, falling below the cost of most fossil fuels used for maritime transport. This trend is attributed to rising marine gas oil prices caused by Middle East tensions and producer strategies to meet European Union emission targets.

In Argentina, the Senate has approved a reform to the biofuels law. The initiative, which moves to the Chamber of Deputies, aims to increase mandatory blending requirements for biodiesel and bioethanol in gasoline and diesel to support regional economies and reduce fuel imports.

Meanwhile, Germany is tightening greenhouse gas (GHG) emission obligations for transport fuels. The German GHG quota is set to rise from 10.6% in 2025 to 12% in 2026, reaching 17.5% by 2027. These regulations are expected to drive demand for conventional biofuels, biodiesel, and bioethanol, while also boosting the biomethane and bio-LNG sectors. Additionally, Germany has eliminated double-counting incentives for advanced and waste-based biofuels starting in 2026 to mitigate producer fraud.
