Biomethane development offers strategic energy autonomy for Spain and Europe
The development of biogas and biomethane is emerging as a strategic opportunity for energy autonomy and decarbonization in Spain and Europe. Unlike solar or wind energy, biogas is considered a manageable resource because its production does not depend directly on weather conditions and can reach up to 8,000 annual hours.
In the Valencian Community, the high volume of organic waste from households, agriculture, and livestock provides significant raw material potential. Experts suggest that integrating this technology with existing natural gas networks can help meet European and national decarbonization goals.
Industry stakeholders are focusing on circular economy models that transform waste into energy and new resources. Key discussions involve the technical optimization of bioenergy plants, the importance of social license within local territories, and the strategic role of the agro-livestock sector in the transition toward sustainable energy production.
