Bipolar disorder in Germany: disability degree eligibility and distinct personality traits

People in Germany diagnosed with bipolar disorder can apply for a Grad der Behinderung (GdB) – a disability rating that ranges from 20 to 100 in ten‑point steps. The rating reflects how severely the condition limits participation in everyday life, and a higher GdB can provide access to financial relief and other compensations. Bipolar disorder is characterised by alternating manic and depressive episodes, often beginning in young adulthood and treated with medication and psychotherapy.

A meta‑analysis of 18 studies involving 1,694 patients and 2,153 healthy controls found that individuals with bipolar disorder differ in several personality dimensions. Compared with the general population, they tend to be more anxious, less sociable, and on average less conscientious. The researchers suggest that these trait differences could aid in identifying persons at risk for developing the disorder.
