European bird migration intensifies across the continent

Autumn bird migration is currently underway across Europe, with various species utilizing different regions for rest and wintering. In Switzerland, starlings are gathering in large flocks in the reed belts of Greifensee to rest before migrating to warmer regions.

In Germany, thousands of cranes are congregating at resting sites in the north and east to feed and build energy reserves for their flight toward destinations such as France or Spain. Similarly, the Netherlands serves as a vital pitstop for species like the Red-necked Phalarope, which travels from Arctic regions toward West Africa, and the Black Woodpecker.

Spain acts as a major bridge between Europe and Africa, receiving millions of birds. Large numbers of cranes, geese, and thrushes from Scandinavia and Central Europe are expected to arrive between mid-October and November. Key locations include the Laguna de Gallocanta and the wetlands of Extremadura and Zamora, where birds find food and shelter for the winter months.
