BirdLife International report shows 45% of migratory bird species in decline
The sixth edition of the State of the World’s Birds report, published by BirdLife International, reveals that 45% of the 1,843 migratory bird species studied are experiencing population declines. Additionally, one in nine migratory species—approximately 11%—is considered globally threatened.
Shorebirds and seabirds are among the most severely impacted groups, with 54% and 49% of their migratory species showing decreasing population trends, respectively. The report highlights that these birds rely on a complex network of habitats across continents, known as flyways, to breed, rest, and feed.
Threats to these populations are widespread and include habitat loss and degradation, climate change, pollution, agricultural expansion, hunting, invasive species, and infrastructure development. Experts emphasize that conservation efforts cannot focus on isolated locations or single species; instead, they must protect the entire network of sites used throughout the birds' annual cycles to ensure their survival.
