Migratory bird population decline report

Overview

The sixth edition of the ‘State of the World’s Birds’ report, published by BirdLife International, indicates that 45% of the 1,843 migratory bird species studied are facing population declines. The findings show that approximately 11% of migratory species, or roughly one in nine, are considered globally threatened.

Shorebirds and seabirds are identified as particularly vulnerable groups. Specifically, 54% of migratory shorebird populations are showing decreasing trends, while 42% of seabird species using marine migration routes are threatened with extinction.

The report notes that these birds depend on complex networks of habitats known as flyways, including the Americas Flyway System and the Africa-Eurasia Flyway System. Threats to these populations include habitat loss, climate change, pollution, agricultural expansion, hunting, invasive species, and infrastructure development. Experts suggest that conservation must protect entire networks of sites used throughout annual cycles rather than focusing on isolated locations.
