Birmingham stadium regeneration plans combine football upgrades with new nature site

Birmingham City Council’s draft Local Plan outlines a major regeneration programme centred on the city’s two Premier League clubs. The plan supports Birmingham City FC’s proposed Powerhouse stadium on the 48‑acre Wheels Park site and backs a permanent capacity increase for Aston Villa’s Villa Park.

For the Wheels Park development, the council proposes designating part of the land as a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation. Surveys identified valuable neutral grassland, semi‑natural woodland and orchid species, leading to a recommendation to protect the habitat while proceeding with the stadium, a sports quarter, new transport links, a training centre and mixed‑use housing.

The Villa Park proposal includes expanding the North Stand, redeveloping nearby industrial land into new homes, improving public realms, protecting historic Aston Hall and the River Tame, and upgrading Witton Station to handle match‑day traffic. Both projects aim to blend football infrastructure with environmental and community benefits.
