Birmingham stadium regeneration and nature plan

In late July 2026 Birmingham City Council released a draft Local Plan that set out a large‑scale regeneration programme centred on the city’s two Premier League clubs. The proposal earmarked the 48‑acre Wheels Park site for Birmingham City FC’s new Powerhouse stadium and linked it to a permanent capacity increase at Aston Villa’s Villa Park. A portion of Wheels Park was identified as a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation, with surveys highlighting valuable grassland, woodland and orchid habitat, prompting a recommendation to protect the area while proceeding with the stadium, a sports quarter, new transport links, a training centre and mixed‑use housing.

A few days later the council detailed how the Sports Quarter would be advanced. The plan now includes the Powerhouse stadium, a women’s stadium, an arena, a training centre and a substantial mixed‑use housing component on the Wheels Park site. Officials highlighted job creation, investment attraction and the ambition to make Birmingham a global sports and events hub. In parallel, the council proposed 14 new nature‑conservation sites and extensions to six existing ones—covering rare grassland, woodland, scrub and canal habitats—as part of a City of Nature Plan embedded in the draft Local Plan 2025‑2044, which also aims to deliver 87,700 new homes, mainly affordable and sustainable, on brownfield land.
