Bishop Chang Yanfeng Ordained in China’s Inner Mongolia

Bishop Chang Yanfeng Inner Mongolia Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association Sino‑Vatican agreement episcopal ordination

A new Catholic bishop, Chang Yanfeng, was consecrated on July 21, 2026 in Hongshan district of Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia. The ceremony, attended by about 400 priests, nuns and laypeople, was the fourth episcopal ordination in China since Pope Leo XIV began his pontificate in May 2025. It was presided over by Bishop Meng Qinglu, vice‑chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA), and attended by other CCPA officials.

Chang, born in 1984 in Hebei Province, studied theology in Shenyang, was ordained a priest in 2010 and earned a master’s degree in Biblical Theology in South Korea. He has served as director of the CCPA in Chifeng and was appointed bishop of the Chifeng Diocese on March 20, 2026. The ordination proceeds under the 2018 Sino‑Vatican provisional agreement, which allows Beijing‑approved bishops to receive Vatican assent, a long‑standing point of tension between the Holy See and China.
