Vatican‑China bishop appointments

In late July 2026 the implementation of the 2018 provisional Vatican‑China agreement on episcopal appointments continued in Inner Mongolia. On 21 July, Bishop Chang Yanfeng was consecrated in Chifeng, marking the fourth episcopal ordination in China since Pope Leo XIV’s accession. The ceremony was overseen by officials of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association and proceeded under the agreement that allows Beijing‑approved candidates to receive Vatican assent.

A few days later, on 27 July, the Vatican announced the formal appointment of two new bishops in the region. Francis Xavier Duan Yongkun was named coadjutor bishop of Bameng, while Joseph Chang Yanfeng – the same bishop ordained earlier – was confirmed as bishop of Chifeng. The announcements underscored the ongoing effort to normalise the Catholic hierarchy in mainland China while navigating the broader diplomatic and religious‑freedom tensions between the Holy See and Beijing.
