Pope Leo XIV issues directives on pastoral ministry and education

Pope Leo XIV has issued several directives aimed at refining the Church's pastoral and educational missions. In a letter to the bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pope emphasized the need for clergy to engage deeply with local communities, using the example of San Toribio de Mogrovejo to advocate for a ministry of proximity rather than one managed solely through official documents.

Addressing leaders in the Diocese of Rome, the Pope called for a shift toward pastoral evaluation. He encouraged clergy to focus on the quality of their ministry, suggesting that they should aim to ‘do less and do it better’ by prioritizing authentic encounters with Christ and community building over the mere accumulation of new initiatives.

In the realm of education, Bishop Nicolò Anselmi of Rimini highlighted the importance of an ‘educational alliance’ between schools, families, and teachers. This message, aligned with the Pope's encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’, stresses that education must go beyond digital data transmission to foster human connection and moral growth.

Additionally, the Pope addressed the inaugural meeting of the Leo XIV International Study Center in Florence. The institution is tasked with training individuals to engage in public and political life through the lens of the Church's social doctrine and the Augustinian intellectual tradition.
