Bosnia and Herzegovina: OHR and OSCE warn against secessionist rhetoric
The Office of the High Representative (OHR) and the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina have issued warnings regarding recent political rhetoric in the region. Both organizations stated that unilateral calls for secession, independence, or the abolition of entities are contrary to the constitutional framework established by the Dayton Peace Agreement. The OHR specifically cautioned political leaders against using the fears and emotions of citizens for political gain and urged them to focus on addressing the actual needs of the population.
The OSCE Mission emphasized that rhetoric questioning the existence of the state or its entities threatens regional stability and undermines progress.
In a separate but related development, the Bishops' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a message ahead of the October 2026 general elections. The bishops called on the faithful to vote responsibly and in the spirit of Christian maturity. They emphasized that the Church does not dictate political choices but encouraged voters to consider how candidates align with teachings on human dignity, life, marriage, family, and social justice. The bishops also highlighted the need for a fair electoral process that respects the equality of all constituent peoples and warned against the overvoting of smaller nations.
