Bistrița Medieval Citadel archaeological finds reveal new structures

Archaeological investigations conducted as part of a restoration project for the Bistrița Medieval Citadel have revealed significant new findings. The project, funded by the Bistrița City Hall with over 12 million lei, aims to revitalize the historic heritage and transform the site into a cultural and tourism hub.

Key discoveries include a previously unknown brick floor structure within the Dogarilor Tower (Fossbinterturm). This structure features two marginal gutters and a spillway canal. Excavations of the canal yielded a rich ceramic treasure spanning from the classical and late Middle Ages to the modern era, providing insights into how the space was utilized over centuries.

Additionally, archaeologists identified the foundations of a circular bastion dating back to the 16th century on the western side of the citadel walls near the tower. The foundations, measuring approximately 21 meters in length, remain in a remarkably good state of preservation despite modern human interventions in the area.
