Bistrița medieval citadel restoration and cultural programs

Overview

Archaeological excavations at the Bistrița Medieval Citadel, part of a 12 million lei restoration project, have uncovered significant historical structures. Findings include a previously unknown brick floor with gutters and a spillway canal in the Dogarilor Tower, which contained a ceramic treasure ranging from the classical and late Middle Ages to the modern era. Additionally, researchers identified well-preserved 16th-century foundations of a circular bastion on the western side of the citadel walls.

Following these restoration efforts, the city is leveraging its status as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of architecture. The Turnul Dogarilor has officially reopened to the public, marking a milestone in the city’s efforts to use culture and architecture for urban development. The inauguration of the UNESCO program includes cultural festivities such as a New Media Art exhibition and video mapping performances.
