Bistrița school stabbing: 13-year-old attacks teacher and student

A 13-year-old student attacked a teacher and a classmate with a knife at the Ștefan cel Mare Middle School in Bistrița, Romania, on Monday morning. The incident occurred around 08:40, prompting an immediate police response. The 28-year-old teacher and a 12-year-old student sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital; both are reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities are investigating the motive, with Chief Inspector Vasile Șteopoaie suggesting the attack may have been driven by radicalism, potentially targeting a student of a different religion. The DIICOT (Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism) has taken over the case. Preliminary reports indicate the student may have planned the attack for eight months, having posted messages on TikTok regarding his intentions and referencing Norse mythology.

Following the attack, classes at the school were suspended and moved online. The incident also caused significant distress among other students, with at least 14 individuals, including 13 minors, experiencing panic attacks. Because the attacker is under 14, he cannot be held criminally liable, though he may face involuntary psychiatric hospitalization following an evaluation in Cluj-Napoca.
