School knife attacks in Turkey and Romania

Overview

In mid-October 2026, separate incidents of school violence involving knives were reported in Turkey and Romania.

In Adana, Turkey, a sixth-grade student at Aliye İzzet Begoviç Ortaokulu used a bread knife brought from home to wound a classmate’s arm following a dispute over rumors. The injured student was hospitalized in good condition, and the responsible student was taken into custody by the Juvenile Branch Directorate. Education at the school was suspended for one day.

In Bistrița, Romania, a 13-year-old seventh-grade student attacked a teacher and a classmate with a knife at the Ștefan cel Mare Middle School on the morning of October 19. The assailant reportedly entered the school wearing a mask and a motorcycle helmet. A 28-year-old mathematics teacher sustained wounds to the forehead and abdomen, and a 12-year-old student was also injured. While initial reports indicated the victims were stable, subsequent updates noted they remained in critical condition at the Bistrița Emergency Hospital. The incident caused widespread panic, with at least 14 individuals, including 13 minors, suffering from panic attacks. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) has taken over the investigation. Vasile Șteopoaie, head of the Bistrița-Năsăud County School Inspectorate, stated the motive appeared to be religious radicalization, as the attacker allegedly targeted a student of a different religion. Investigations later revealed the teenager had authored a 60-page online manifesto expressing neo-Nazi beliefs and racial hatred. Because the attacker is 13, he cannot be held criminally liable and has been transferred to a pediatric psychiatric clinic in Cluj-Napoca for evaluation.

In a separate Romanian incident in Muntenii de Jos, a 56-year-old teacher was found with a knife in his bag, claiming he brought it for ‘self-defense’ against students.
