Bitcoin achieves milestone with quantum-resistant transaction
A transaction designed to resist future attacks from quantum computers has been successfully included in the Bitcoin blockchain. This development provides a potential pathway to protect cryptocurrencies before quantum technology becomes capable of breaking current cryptographic standards.
On August 26, 2026, the demonstration was conducted by StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy using a system called Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB). Notably, the transaction was processed without modifying the system's existing consensus rules.
The goal of the QSB system is not to immediately replace Bitcoin's entire cryptographic framework, but to demonstrate that funds can be moved into storage structures designed to remain secure even against powerful quantum computers. Current Bitcoin security relies heavily on elliptic curve cryptography, such as ECDSA and Schnorr signatures, which could theoretically be compromised by a large-scale quantum computer capable of solving complex mathematical problems to derive private keys from public ones.
