Bitcoin ETF flows drove more price volatility than macro factors in 2026
A study by consultancy Vault Capital indicates that Bitcoin ETF capital flows had a greater impact on the cryptocurrency's price in 2026 than macroeconomic factors. According to the report, 48% of weekly Bitcoin price fluctuations tracked ETF buying and selling activity, while 40% were driven by internal crypto market factors and only 12% by macroeconomic variables.
Felipe Mendes, head of Research at Vault, noted that ETF flows served as a more reliable indicator of Bitcoin's movement than the economic agenda. The data suggests that, on average, every 1,000 Bitcoins purchased via ETFs coincided with a price increase of approximately 0.3% during that week.
The report also highlighted that Bitcoin's upward trajectory remained resilient despite recent interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Between June 30 and September 30, Bitcoin rose 42.8% even as 10-year US Treasury yields increased by 0.85 percentage points. For the fourth quarter, Vault identifies the primary risk as a potential combination of rising interest rates and capital outflows from ETFs.
