US inflation data fuels Federal Reserve rate hike expectations

U.S. inflation data for August shows the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.4%, while year-on-year inflation remained at 3.4%. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose by 0.3%, exceeding economist expectations of 0.2%. Gasoline prices surged 3.9%, contributing significantly to the monthly increase.

The report has heightened expectations for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its upcoming September 15–16 meeting. Market-implied odds for a rate hike have risen above 85%, with some prediction markets placing the probability of a 25-basis-point increase at over 81%.

Cryptocurrency markets have reacted with volatility. Bitcoin initially dipped toward $76,000 following the release before recovering to trade above $77,000. However, the outlook for risk assets remains pressured as persistent inflation reduces hopes for near-term rate cuts. CoinShares reported that digital asset investment products saw $243 million in weekly outflows as investors reassessed monetary policy expectations.
