Bitcoin faces volatility amid hawkish Federal Reserve signals

The cryptocurrency market is experiencing significant volatility as Bitcoin faces technical resistance and macroeconomic shifts. While Bitcoin recently surged toward $80,000, driven by increased US demand—evidenced by positive Coinbase premiums and substantial inflows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs—it has recently faced downward pressure. Recent price drops saw Bitcoin fall below $78,000 and Ethereum below $2,500, resulting in over $470 million in liquidations within a 24-hour period.

Macroeconomic factors are playing a decisive role. Following the Jackson Hole symposium, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a hawkish stance on inflation, reinforcing the central bank's commitment to its 2% target. This has led traders to increase bets on a potential September interest rate hike, causing a shift in investor sentiment toward risk-off assets and impacting both tech stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Additionally, the business model of companies holding Bitcoin as a reserve has faced scrutiny. The total market value of the top 50 Bitcoin-holding companies has declined by over $80 billion since mid-2025, as many firms struggle with the volatility and the debt used to finance their crypto acquisitions. While institutional demand via ETFs remains a strong pillar, short-term market overheating and profit-taking by large holders continue to create selling pressure.
